Google turns Gemini into a work agent with its own email address
Businesses get a Gemini that takes a goal, does the steps, and logs every action. Consumers come later.
At its Gemini at Work event on October 8, Google turned Gemini into a single “agent” for the workplace. The difference from a chatbot: you hand it a goal, not step-by-step instructions, and it plans and carries out the work itself, then delivers the result inside the apps you already use.
What’s new:
- It plugs into Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Calendar, Microsoft 365, Slack, Salesforce and a long list of business databases.
- Jobs can keep running for hours or days after you close your laptop.
- It can split a big task among helper agents, and even create “coworker” agents with their own work email addresses you can tag or email.
- It picks an AI model for each job, including Anthropic’s Claude models alongside Gemini.
- Every action is logged under the agent’s name, and companies can set spending caps.
Picture asking it to pull last quarter’s sales numbers, build a slide deck and email it to your manager, as one request instead of five apps.
The catch: this is for businesses first. Google says a consumer version is coming but gave no date. Pricing for the agent itself was not spelled out, and the big adoption numbers shared on stage are Google’s own claims. An agent that can email people on your behalf also needs a human checking what it sends.
