Google says schools that block its AI will lose Search
Google plans to turn its AI off by default for K-12 students, but schools that keep it fully off lose Search too.
On November 3, Google announced that AI tools will be off by default for K-12 student accounts, and schools will have to switch them on. The list includes Gemini, NotebookLM, Gemini in Classroom and Search. TechCrunch says the change takes effect next year, and Fox 29, citing the New York Times, says early 2027.
The twist is Search. Google says AI is built into it, so a school that blocks all of Google’s AI also loses Search. Chris Phillips, Google’s education VP, said students “will not have access to search” and would see a message from their school.
Google also launched Guided Learning, a tool meant to coach students through problems with questions instead of handing over answers. It is already live in Classroom, with a Search pilot at select US schools starting this month.
Critics objected fast. Sen. Bernie Sanders called it extortion, and former FTC chair Lina Khan called it anticompetitive. Google says it listened to educators and turned AI off by default.
The catch: Details are thin. Google hasn’t said how this affects schools that want Chromebooks and Workspace but no generative AI, and it plans to share specifics with schools in the coming months.
What to do now
- Parents: ask your school whether it plans to turn Google’s AI on for students.
- Teachers: ask your IT team what Search access will look like next year.
- Administrators: watch for Google’s follow-up guidance and plan a choice before the change lands.
