Anthropic's IPO filing says its AI may soon speed up AI research
In an amended filing, Anthropic said it may soon hit its own safety threshold for AI that speeds up AI development.
Anthropic filed an amended S-1 with the SEC on November 2. Alongside updated financials, the risk factors say internal estimates suggest it “may imminently meet” the Responsible Scaling Policy’s definition of “dramatically accelerated progress attributable to AI,” according to Data Studios. That idea is often called recursive self-improvement, or RSI: AI getting good enough at building AI that progress speeds up.
TechCrunch adds that Anthropic admits it has missed past speedups until after they happened, and says AI helped build models whose jumps in ability it did not spot at the time. The filing also says Anthropic is considering changes to its policy to keep humans in control of frontier model development.
Anthropic says none of its current models are designated as past the threshold, and it is still reviewing the data. It does not expect to let Claude design successive frontier models without meaningful human supervision.
The catch: An S-1 is both a legal disclosure and a sales document, and TechCrunch notes skeptics see the warning as possible marketing. Data Studios says the filing names no model, gives no date and does not publish the estimates. It also announces no change to any product, plan or price.
Background
RSI became a common term in 2026. Many people treated it as a buzzword because it was hard to define or prove. Here, the company’s own policy supplies the definition.
What to watch next
- Whether Anthropic publishes updates to its Responsible Scaling Policy, which it says it is considering.
- Whether it designates any model as past the threshold.
