Google Play now runs the apps you build with AI, just for you
Make a small Android app by describing it, then install it from Play without becoming a developer.
Building your own app by describing it to an AI is often called “vibe coding.” Google AI Studio has let people do that for Android since May, but getting the result onto your phone meant technical sideloading steps. As of October 13, Google Play handles that part for you.
You build the app in AI Studio, then launch it on your phone through Play using your normal Google account. No developer account needed. The app stays private: it does not show up in the store and nobody else can find it. A new personal library section keeps your creations in one place so you can reinstall them on another device.
What to know:
- Rolling out first to adults 18 and over in the US and some other markets.
- Personal apps still have to follow Play’s usual rules.
- Sharing with a small circle of friends and family is promised in the coming months.
- If you want the whole world to get your app, you have to switch to a professional developer account and pass Google’s standard reviews.
The catch: right now it is strictly one person, one app. And an app you did not write yourself can still have bugs, so be careful what personal data you feed into it.
Try it: start with something small and boring, like a chore chart or a packing list. That is where these tools shine.
