OpenAI's models are coming to Google Cloud, with Codex support
Businesses on Google Cloud will be able to buy OpenAI's top models and Codex alongside Gemini, starting with a private preview.
On October 21, OpenAI and Google Cloud announced a partnership that puts OpenAI’s frontier models and its Codex coding workflows into Google Cloud’s Model Garden, the catalog where Google sells AI models.
Three models are rolling out in private preview to select enterprise customers: GPT-6 Astra for demanding coding and professional work, GPT-6.1 Sol for near-Astra ability at lower cost, and GPT-6 Luna for fast, cheap everyday tasks. Codex users can already connect their local Codex CLI and Desktop tools to Google’s Gemini platform for inference. OpenAI says general availability is planned in the coming weeks.
Billing runs through Google Cloud Marketplace. Usage lands on one Google Cloud invoice and can count against existing cloud commitments. Google says prompts and outputs stay inside the customer’s data perimeter and are not used to train its foundation models. OpenAI says Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner.
The catch: This is a private preview for select enterprise customers, so most people can’t use it yet. Pricing wasn’t given in the sources I opened, and Zero Data Retention and Confidential Compute are listed as coming soon.
What it means for small businesses
- If your tools already run on Google Cloud, you may be able to try OpenAI models without a new vendor contract.
- One invoice could simplify bookkeeping if you use several AI models.
- You can ask both companies for access through the request forms they posted.
