Grok Bot users hit their weekly limits early, and Musk blames cost
Paying users saw their weekly allowance jump or shrink over the weekend, and Musk said serving the bot cost too much.
Over the Halloween weekend, some paying Grok Bot users found their weekly usage meters at or near 100%. Some reported jumps from as low as 50%, and one said they hit the cap with four days left before the weekly reset.
On Sunday, November 1, Musk replied on X to a user asking about a reset. He wrote that the cost of serving Grok Bot “was unsustainably high relative to revenue.” TechCrunch reports he said the change was not a glitch. Grok’s official account also pointed to adjusted allocations because of serving costs, and to a separate dashboard bug that showed inflated readings.
Grok Bot is xAI’s agent-style assistant. It does multi-step tasks in the background, which takes far more computing than a plain chat.
The catch: Neither xAI nor Musk gave cost or revenue figures, and nobody has said whether limits will change again or accounts will be reset. One user’s “roughly cut in half” estimate is not an official number.
What to do now
- Check your usage meter once a day this week, not just at the end.
- Break big jobs into smaller tasks so one run does not use up the allowance.
- If Grok Bot is part of a client workflow, set up a backup tool before you rely on it.
- Hold off on upgrading plans until xAI states the new limits.
