What if your AI kept working after the chat closed?
OpenAI's dots are persistent workers with their own computer and browser, which changes both what they can do and the risk.
OpenAI has launched dots, always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra.
Each dot has its own cloud computer and browser. It can keep working toward continuing goals and learns from feedback over time.
OpenAI says dots can connect to more than 4,000 apps through plugins, and you can reach them through ChatGPT, Slack, Teams, or voice.
Rollout has started for eligible Pro and Business Premium users. Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare users can try the beta once a workspace admin turns it on.
The bigger signal is not another chat interface. It is a persistent worker with a dedicated workspace, connected tools, ongoing context, and the ability to work in the background.
The catch: that persistence also changes the risk. More access means you need stronger permission boundaries. These actions should stop at a human approval gate:
- Public publishing
- Outbound messages
- Purchases
- Credential changes
- Deletion
The practical starting point is one narrow, read-only monitoring job. Give the agent a dedicated workspace, explicit permissions, and an audit trail. Prove the loop before you grant it the power to act.
