ChatGPT's Chrome extension can now read and work in your open tabs
OpenAI's Chrome extension can compare what is open across tabs, and a Work mode can fill forms and send messages for you.
On October 15, OpenAI announced that the ChatGPT extension for Chrome can now work with the tabs you already have open, so you can stop switching between windows.
It has two modes:
- Chat looks across your open tabs and pulls out what matters. OpenAI’s example is three furniture sites open at once, with ChatGPT comparing the sofas on size, materials, delivery time and return policy.
- Work can control those tabs to send messages, fill in forms, download files and group a pile of tabs. Digit adds that it can gather facts from several sites into a comparison sheet.
The extension is in the Chrome Web Store, and OpenAI says it is available on all ChatGPT plans.
The catch: The coverage doesn’t say whether free accounts get Work mode’s tab control, or whether ChatGPT asks before sending or submitting something. An agent that acts inside pages where you are signed in can also be tricked by hidden text on a page, so check what it did.
Try this prompt
Look at the tabs I have open about [product type]. Compare them in a table on price, key features, delivery time and return policy. Tell me which one fits [my situation] and why. Do not click or submit anything.
Using my open tabs, fill in the form on [site] with the details I paste below. Stop before you submit and show me what you entered.
Use cases
- A shopper could compare three laptops across store pages without retyping specs.
- A freelancer might ask it to group the tabs for one client and leave the rest alone.
- A student could have a dense article explained in plain language.
