ChatGPT is merging its Chat and Work tabs, and Codex will share your limit
OpenAI told users the desktop app will combine Chat and Work, and chatting and coding will count against one allowance.
OpenAI emailed users on November 2 to say the ChatGPT desktop app will merge its Chat and Work tabs into one place. The idea is that you can start with a rough idea and have ChatGPT carry it through to a finished result without changing tabs.
You can bring in files and plugins, then ask ChatGPT to build a website, make a presentation or finish web tasks while you review and guide the work.
- Codex stays a separate section of the desktop app.
- ChatGPT and Codex will draw from the same token allowance.
- OpenAI says most people will not notice, but some may “wait for resets more frequently.”
- A small group of users gets it first for feedback, then a wider rollout.
The catch: The coverage gives no rollout date, does not say which plans get it, and does not say how large the shared allowance is. If you lean on Codex, you may hit your limit sooner.
What to do now
- Open your usage or plan page in the app and note how close you usually get to your limit.
- If you use ChatGPT and Codex heavily, expect to wait longer between resets.
- Save your best Work-tab prompts somewhere outside the app, in case the layout changes.
Try this prompt
Act as a [job, e.g. small bakery owner]. I have [files or notes]. Build a simple one-page plan for [goal, e.g. a holiday pre-order campaign]. Show me the steps first, then draft the page and ask me what to change.
